June 26, Community Sewing Walker Bags.

This month’s project is walker bags, and Rema Jones, our Community Service Coordinator, has put together another batch of fantastic kits! They’ll be available on Margaret Caley’s front porch in Concord, starting June 11. If you’d like to confirm kit availability before heading to Margaret’s, please contact her at donate@asgcontracosta.org.

This free virtual program will be held on Zoom. We’re requiring advance registration, but you do not need to establish a Zoom account to register.

Program details and how to register are outlined below. the virtual “doors” will open at 12:55 PM, so everyone will be ready to start promptly at 1:00.

We hope you’ll join us – community service is such an important part of the ASG experience. Rema makes it so fun and easy for everyone to participate. As with other recent programs, we are inviting other chapters to participate.

This is the second of three community service events scheduled for 2021. On June 26th we will make Walker Bags to aid community members who require the assistance of a walker or wheelchair. Have a walker carryall provides a greater sense of independence to the walker community because it allows individuals to walk securely while carrying needed objects at the same time.

The Concord Senior Center is sponsoring a Health Expo for local seniors and they plan on distributing the walker bags we create.

You may choose from two kits. 1) A very easy sew involving repurposing a ready-made apron into a walker caddy, pictured above left. and 2) An easy Kwik Sew pattern featuring additional sewing techniques such as applying pockets, Velcro, and binding. Illustrated in the lower picture.

Constructing the caddy bags requires minimal sewing experience – both projects are beginner-friendly and provide a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community.

You will need the following equipment and materials: 

  • Sewing machine (an optional serger can also be used)
  • Matching all-purpose thread. Depending on your kit selection, red white, or blue will do.
  • Basic sewing supplies such as shears, rotary cutter and mat, pins, ruler, and seam ripper.

Community service sewing kits are available for pickup starting Friday, June 11, from Margaret Caley’s front porch as noted above.

Please confirm your attendance and pick up your kit no later than June 19.



May 12 and June 9 Sit and Sew.

Donna Alexander, our program chair, will host a virtual sit and sew, as she does every second Wednesday of the month. Donna finds a simple yet useful project for us to work on if we choose. We are welcome to work on our own projects, also. It’s a time for casual conversation and the chance to show off what you’ve been creating.  You may also contact Diana Hotelling, our president for log-in credentials to our zoom meeting. If you are a regular participant, the previous log-in credentials will work again.

At our July CAB meeting, it was decided that we will meet virtually until at least one month after the state of California authorizes indoor gatherings for groups of our size.  At that time we will look again at holding indoor meetings. Check our our calendar of virtual programs. Also join our Sit and Sew Zoom meetings on the 2nd Wednesday afternoon of each month.
